CADILLAC CTS-V WAGON: BEAST OF BURDEN!

Hemmings’ Mike McNessor blogs about Caddy’s family hauler – CADILLAC CTS-V WAGON: BEAST OF BURDEN – with a 6.2-liter LSA V-8 and available manual and automatic transmissions.

CADILLAC CTS-V WAGON: BEAST OF BURDEN!

Most vehicles degenerate into third- or fourth-hand beaters before clawing their way to collectability — assuming they survive the years of neglect and deferred maintenance. Not so with Cadillac’s 2011-’14 CTS-V Wagons. The newest of these factory hot-rod Caddy haulers turned 10 years old in 2024 and their collectible status seems more secure than ever.

CTS-V Wagon prices have remained stable since 2020, averaging more than $50,000 for an automatic-equipped V or $70,000 for a six-speed car, according to Classic.com. That puts them in the neighborhood of their factory $60,000-plus base MSRP. By piling on some options, like the $3,400 Recaro seats, $1,150 UltraView sunroof or $800 wheels, the price of a new CTS-V WAGON could’ve increased to more than $70,000, back then.CADILLAC CTS-V WAGON: BEAST OF BURDEN!V wagons were never produced in large quantities —something that’s also in their favor. Fewer than 1,800 were built over four model years, and of those, just 514 were equipped with manual transmissions. But these cars come up for sale quite often. There are usually several up for grabs on Hemmings.com. Last June, a low-mileage Opulent Blue, automatic example sold for $59,850 (including fees) as a Make Offer listing. During the auction it attracted 19 bids — the highest of which was $52,000 (from the bidder who wound up offering more and ultimately buying the car)— and nearly 13,000 views.

Cost of living crisis is fuelling booming used car market

Used car lot

New research has highlighted the No 1 reason why more people choose used cars over factory-fresh models.

A poll commissioned by The Motor Ombudsman found that more than half of respondents (58%) said that their primary motivation would be to save money.

This is particularly pertinent at a time when consumer budgets remain under pressure, with further increases looming for household bills, such as council tax, broadband, water, and standing energy charges.

More than 7.2 million used cars changed hands in 2023, compared to 1.9 million new car registrations, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The research also revealed that four in 10 respondents would prefer buying a car that had one or more previous owners to help avoid bearing the initial loss in value (ie depreciation), which is especially associated with buying a car from new.

Nearly a third (32%) said there is often a large choice of vehicles to select from across the country when shopping around, whilst just over a quarter of survey participants (26%) agreed that they would be able to test drive and buy cars that were for sale on forecourts.

When quizzed about some of the primary benefits of buying a used car from a retailer, rather than a private individual, via a social media advert for example, nearly half (48%) of respondents stated that going to an established trader provided them with the added reassurance that a car had undergone checks prior to going on sale.

Furthermore, 43% of survey participants wanted a safety net in case something went wrong with their car after buying it, as they would have more legal rights, and could use The Motor Ombudsman for assistance in resolving a dispute if the retailer was accredited.

Finally, the poll highlighted what type of car would top their used car wishlist for 2024. The overriding majority (46%) would buy a petrol model, with those in the 55 age bracket the most likely to do so (52%).

Around a quarter (26%) said a hybrid would be their preferred choice, followed by a diesel variant (17%), whilst one in 10 (10%) would look to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle (EV).

1966-’67 DODGE CHARGER: HORSEPOWER & HERITAGE!

Dodge hit the midsize-muscle market running in 1966 with a luxurious fastback Charger. Hagerty’s Eddy Eckart chronicles the history of the Charger nameplate, from rare badge-engineered Dart to the 1966-1967 DODGE CHARGER: HORSEPOWER & HERITAGE!

1966-'67 DODGE CHARGER: HORSEPOWER & HERITAGE!

Ask enthusiasts the first thing they think of when they hear “Dodge Charger,” and they’re bound to mention Hellcats or reference the 1968-70 second-generation cars, which were popular in their own right before securing their everlasting fame through starring roles onscreen in Bullitt and The Dukes of Hazzard. Chances are slim, though, that the first-generation Charger – 1966-1967 DODGE CHARGER: HORSEPOWER & HERITAGE! – would come up among any but the most die-hard Mopar fans.

It might be well-hidden in the shadows of the high-flying second-generation and 700 horse modern siblings, but when properly equipped, the first Charger was able to hold its own on the street while offering up design elements and an interior that set it apart from other intermediate-sized muscle of the period. Today, the first-gen car is more affordable and rare than its more popular 1968-’70 successor and provides a chance to differentiate from what’s become the Charger mainstream.

In the early 1960s, Dodge was looking to liven up its image and showcase its upcoming 426-cubic-inch Hemi engine. The 1964 Dodge Hemi Charger concept was born, a two-seat roadster built off an existing two-door Polara. Unfortunately, the Hemi suffered from some early production issues, so the car didn’t get one in time for its national tour. It did, however, succeed in creating some buzz for the brand.

That same year, Plymouth rolled out its Barracuda, which was immediately overshadowed by Ford’s launch of the Mustang. Eager to get in on the game, Dodge sought a smaller, youth-oriented model of its own based on the Barracuda, but parent Chrysler said no—it’d have to make do with an intermediate-sized model instead.

1966-'67 DODGE CHARGER: HORSEPOWER & HERITAGE!While plans for that car began to get underway, the Charger nameplate first graced a production model in 1965 as a sporty trim level on the “senior compact” Dart. Only 480 Dart Chargers were made, all in yellow (although there is some evidence that one silver car exists), all sporting 273-cubic inch V-8s. In an era when cars received constant visual updates, the Dart’s 1963 redesign was already showing its age, so Dodge teased the upcoming model’s new look with the Charger II concept ahead of the production car’s unveiling.

In 1966, Dodge finally got its sporty coupe. The new Charger was based on Coronet underpinnings and shared much of its front bodywork (along with suspension and brakes) with that model, but was set apart by a striking, large fastback, hidden headlights, and a clean full-width taillight. The swept roofline was distinctive and eye-catching among the more mundane three-box intermediate-size designs of the time, though its looks wouldn’t be considered as sleek, or ultimately as brand-defining, as its 1968 successor.

Ford KA

With the average cost of annual car insurance hitting a record high of £924 last month, more drivers are considering switching to borrowing vehicles instead, claims a leading temporary car insurance provider.

According to Cuvva, UK drivers bought more than 2.5 million short-term policies last year via its app.

Now Cuvva has analysed the one-hour policies sold  (more than 600,000) to uncover which cars are the cheapest to insure for an hour with temporary car insurance.

On average, each of these cars can be insured for less than £13 an hour. And while the Ford Ka comes in as the cheapest car to insure, there are also some larger and more premium cars among the Top 10.

Temporary car insurance lets drivers borrow cars from friends and family quickly and simply, so there’s no need for drivers to own a car in order to drive one. As a separate comprehensive policy, the car owner’s insurance and no claims bonus is protected if something were to happen.

Top 10 cheapest cars to insure with temporary insurance

  1. Ford KA – £12.05/hr
  2. Fiat 500 – £12.15/hr
  3. Mini One – £12.16/hr
  4. Citroen Berlingo – £12.30/hr
  5. Citroen C1 – £12.31/hr
  6. Vauxhall Meriva – £12.36/hr
  7. Kia Sportage – £12.48/hr
  8. Volkswagen Touran – £12.50/hr
  9. Peugeot 107 – £12.53/hr
  10. Mini Cooper – £12.56/hr

“More and more drivers are choosing to borrow cars from friends and family to get around because it’s affordable,” said Darryl Bowman from Cuvva.

“The type of car you choose to drive can make a big difference to the price you pay for your insurance too.”

PEUGEOT E-308 and the Michelin Green Star winner

Peugeot UK has revealed the Top 10 Michelin Green Star restaurants for electric vehicle drivers.

The winners of the prestigious Michelin Green Star Award have been ranked according to the quality of the nearby charging infrastructure, and the number of cities within the 257-mile range of the Peugeot E-308.

First introduced in 2021, the Michelin Green Star is an annual award that highlights restaurants within the Michelin Guide that are at the forefront of sustainable practices in the kitchen.

All the winners offer dining experiences that combine culinary excellence with outstanding eco-friendly commitments.

Apricity in London’s Mayfair topped the list. It can be reached from 12 of the 15 major cities of the UK using the full range of the E-308. Drivers of the model can also benefit from 100kW DC rapid charging, which will power the battery from 20-80% in less than 25 minutes.

Drivers heading to the capital can also enjoy an extensive EV charging network. Apricity has an impressive 650 charging points within just a mile of the award-winning restaurant. The contemporary British restaurant is praised by the guide for its low-waste cooking and sustainable food sourcing.

London locations took the top four spots of the rankings. In second place came St Barts in the City of London, in third is Silo in Hackney Wick, and fourth place went to Petersham Nurseries Café in Richmond-upon-Thames.

Wilsons in Bristol placed fifth in the Peugeot rankings and was the highest ranking of the Michelin Green Star list outside of London.
