Audi RS 3: Born for the Track, Fun in the Snow

Audi RS 3 Snow

YouTubers set out to get the Audi RS 3 stuck in the snow… But it turns out Audi’s compact track weapon still has a lot of rally car capability in its DNA!

TFL Studios recently snagged the Audi RS 3 for review, which is pretty standard for YouTubers and other Auto Journalists. But unlike our track day and drifting adventures in the new RS 3 last year, mother nature had a different plan for Tommy Mica and the TFL team. Nine inches of Rocky Mountain snow. So how does one then properly test and review a 401-horsepower sports sedan with only 4.9-inches of ground clearance?

You try to get it stuck in the snow, of course.

But the RS 3 isn’t just any sports sedan. It descends from a long line of quattro Audis built for Rallycross Championships. And what happens next (which you can watch below) looks like a LOT of fun. Shoed with a fresh set of Pirelli snow tires, the RS3 powers through the snow without issue. Even starting from a stop, the combination of the new all-wheel-drive system and proper rubber made for an unstoppable WRX-in-the-snow rival.

“Dare I say it, [Colorado] feels like the natural home of the Audi brand,” says Roman Mica from behind the camera. “For a few years now, the marketing has been all about the Quattro system, and for a long time, all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive was only for unique vehicles like Jeeps and pickup trucks, but it really became a thing of luxury.”

Behind the wheel, Tommy talks about the different drive modes. For him, what worked for the snow was putting it in Dynamic mode and enabling the traction control to a lower threshold to allow a little bit of wheel spin. He notes that the previous Haldex system did promote a lot more understeer from the front, making it not very confidence-inspiring in low traction conditions. But, the new system makes the RS3 feel like it’s now a “rally beast.”

Cars were always a central part of Kristen’s life. It all started with passing tools to her colorfully cursing sailor of a father while he was underneath Chevy Novas from the 1970s. Eventually she was promoted from Tool Monkey to Apprentice – auto mechanics were her first love. Having graduated from California State University, Monterey Bay in 2020 and married a successful mechanic, she spend most of her days reading, writing and talking about what she loves most: cars.

All-Electric Audi eQ5 Coming by End of Decade, Along With Changes for ICE Q5

2021 Audi Q5

As Audi moves toward a total electric transformation, we have new details on the Audi eQ5, as well as when the existing ICE models may disappear.

Change is inevitable, as they say, and that applies to not only our personal lives, but the automotive world as well. Even as new models are introduced, their replacements are being planned in what is a perpetual product cycle of sorts. On the Audi side of the equation, there’s a lot of change coming over the next few years in terms of its lineup as the luxury brand prepares to go all-electric by the early 2030s, and will stop developing new ICE models by the end of 2026 as it launches EVs such as the new Audi eQ5.

There are still a lot of unknowns in terms of when specific Audi models will be discontinued and when new ones will be introduced, but AutoForecast Solutions recently released a future product roadmap that gives us a glimpse at a couple of them, at least. That list starts with the Q5, which has been around since 2009 and entered its second generation back in 2018. Production of the current model is slated to end on 4/30/2024 at the San Jose Chiapa, Mexico plant, while next-gen production will reportedly follow and run through 9/28/2029.

Audi Q5 Sportback TFSI e in Navarra BlueQ5 Sportback, it’s a fairly new product after having debuted in 2021, capitalizing on the surging “coupe” SUV/crossover trend with its sloping rear roofline. Production of the current-gen Q5 Sportback is slated to run through 6/28/2024, while the next-gen model enters production on 7/1/2024 and is scheduled to run through 6/28/2030, giving ICE fans a few more years to purchase this particular combination.

Finally, we have the Audi eQ5, which seems as if it’s a version of the new Q5 e-tron being sold in China – an all-electric variant of the popular crossover. Given the fact that it’s slated to enter production on 10/1/2029 and continue through 9/28/2035, this makes a lot of sense, as it fits perfectly within Audi’s all-electric transition timeline. It’s unclear if the brand will be ditching its e-tron nameplate for the simpler “e” nomenclature, but that’s what it’s being called for now.

Audi Q5 PHEV

As for the rest of the Audi lineup, well, that remains a bit of a mystery. The brand’s parent company, Volkswagen, is one of the more aggressive at the moment when it comes to transitioning to electrification, but it also seems as if it’s leaving itself bit of an out over the next few years in the event that technology doesn’t progress the way most expect it to.

Gold-wrapped Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai was the UK’s most popular new car of 2022, and the first British-built model to top the annual sales charts for 24 years.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) confirm that the home-grown Qashqai – which was designed in Paddington, engineered in Cranfield and is built in Sunderland – was the nation’s best-selling car of the last 12 months.

A total of 42,704 new Qashqais were driven off dealership forecourts across the UK in 2022, reported the SMMT.

To celebrate the achievement, an exclusive gold-wrapped Qashqai was created in honour of the 7,000 Nissan employees from around the UK that have contributed to its success.

  1. Nissan Qashqai – 42,704
  2. Vauxhall Corsa – 35,910
  3. Tesla Model Y – 35,551
  4. Ford Puma – 35,088
  5. Mini – 32, 387
  6. Kia Sportage – 29,655
  7. Hyundai Tucson – 27,839
  8. Volkswagen Golf – 26,588
  9. Ford Kuga – 26,549
  10. Ford Fiesta – 25,070

Overall, 1.61 million new cars were registered in the UK in 2022 – the lowest level since 1992.

Although demand for new vehicles remained high, manufacturers struggled to get hold of parts. There were particularly serious problems obtaining semiconductors, which are used in a vast array of electronic systems, from infotainment systems to engine management.

Meanwhile, demand for electric vehicles continued to grow and they accounted for almost a fifth of new car sales.

Registrations rose from 190,700 to 267,000 – with the EV market share climbing from 11.6% to 16.6%.

The Tesla Model Y was the biggest-selling electric vehicle by far, nothing up 35,551 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model 3 (19,071) and Kia Niro (11,197).

5 Most Expensive Audi Cars Ever Sold

The special Audi creations have been sold for millions of dollars. In one case, well into 8 figures!

2009 Audi E-Tron Concept – $3 Million

With the iconic Audi R8 as a source of inspiration for the proportions of the Audi E-Tron concept of 2009, the German automaker gave the world a glimpse of its electric future. A refined version of the e-Tron concept was introduced in Detroit the following year, which coincidentally also sold for a pretty penny.

2000 Audi Rosemeyer Concept – $3 Million

Audi has long been in the business of creating aspirational mid-engine supercar-type concepts. Years before ‘E-Tron’ was a thing, the folks from Ingolstadt built the famous Rosemeyer concept. When it was designed, the looks of the Rosemeyer harkened back to an art deco aesthetic. This is appropriate, given that the name pays tribute to legendary Auto Union racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer. This W16-powered concept would later become the foundation upon which the Bugatti Veyron was created.

1991 Audi Avus Quattro Concept – $3 Million

Taking us another 9 years back in time, the 1991 Audi Avus Quattro concept was the pinnacle of Audi design and engineering for the time. The chrome exterior and the intriguing looks still dazzle today as they did back when it debuted in Tokyo over 3 decades ago.

2003 Audi Le Mans Concept – $5 Million

The concept car that directly resulted in the creation of the Audi R8, the Le Mans concept is as iconic and memorable of an Audi concept as it gets. It’s no wonder, then, that it’s among the most desirable concept vehicles ever.

2016 Audi R18 – $30 Million

And Audi car with the highest price tag in history is actually the formidable 2016 Audi R18 endurance racer. Achieving amazing success and bringing home multiple world championships between 2012 and 2016, the Audi R18 is arguably the most significant Audi race car ever, and one of the most successful race cars of all time, period.

Goodbye to Ken Block, Automotive Icon for the Ages

RIP Ken Block

The 55-year-old rally driver, Gymkhana superstar, and Audi partner was killed while snowmobiling in Utah. RIP Ken Block.

On January 2, the enthusiast world received a gut punch, when news broke that superstar driver Ken Block had been killed in a snowmobile accident. In a post confirming his death, Block’s company Hoonigan wrote “Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband.”

The outpouring of grief was immediate, and “broke the Internet” in the way that Block was known to do. Except for outrageous stunts, tire smoke, and unbridled automotive excess, there was only heartbreak. The 55-year-old action sports phenomenon leaves behind a wife and three children.

In an official statement from Ingolstadt, Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board for Technical Development at AUDI AG said, “Ken was a pioneer and in recent years also a member of the Audi family. He was valued and warmly welcomed by all. We have lost a great person and respected sportsman, who will always have his place in the history of Audi Sport.”

Fittingly, one of Block’s final Instagram posts was congratulating his 16-year-old daughter Lia on finishing her 1985 Audi Ur Quattro project car.

RIP Ken Block

As fans of the Four Rings know, Block began his partnership with Audi in September of 2021, and in just over a year, it produced an amazing cache of content. While he was tapped primarily to help develop electric vehicles, there was also plenty for fans of classic Audi iron to drool over.

Here are some of our favorite moments from that too-short period.

RIP Ken Block

Here, Block travels to Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. Once there, he gets to choose two ridiculous Audi racecars to hoon around in. They are both crazy fast, but they approach their speed in two very different ways.

The first car is Hans Stuck’s championship-winning DTM car. The second is the Audi e-tron Vision GT. Are you not entertained?

Ken Block Reveals Elektrikhana Hero Car

This is a reimagined version of the legendary Audi Sport quattro S1. Dubbed the Hooniteron, this beast will sport a carbon fiber chassis, an electric motor at each axle, and lust-inspiring bodywork that looks at once both evolutionary and futuristic.

The name is a mash-up of Hoonigan and e-tron, and as Audi design chief Marc Lichte describes, “the project was about creating a modern, all-electric interpretation of the S1 Pikes Peak.”

Dakar on Ice: Ken Block Drives the Audi RS Q e-tron

Mattias Swedish driver Ekström, who brought his RS Q e-tron to a ninth-place finish at Dakar, had kind words for Block, stating “It only took three turns for Ken to get fully up to speed.”

Now, at this point, it’s a given that Audi Sport’s hybrid racer will return to Dakar next year, and given his experience with the desert race, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Block could claim a driver’s slot. But in Austria, the focus was on fun.

Aside from Rotiform wheels, Toyo all-terrain tires, and a roof rack, the green machine is essentially stock. Of course, that doesn’t stop Block from tackling some of the most gnarly obstacles this gorgeous piece of desert has to offer, and the visuals are absolutely stunning.

This time, producer Neil Cole is the only one riding along, and from some of the expressions he makes in the various parts of the clip? He’s as excited as he is terrified, so it seems like the Hoonigan-in-Chief is earning his money.

Ice Block: Ken Block Hoons Audi Group B Rally Cars

After an all-too-brief walk-through, Block and GP Performance founder GP Kraemer hop into a custom RS e-tron GT and make their way north to the icy circuit, where the real fun begins.

Apparently, the Ice Race used to be held on a frozen lake, but after a competitor plunged through the ice into the frigid water, the organizers wisely decided to move it to terra firma. Watch the video to check out all the action, and stay tuned for an update on the forthcoming Elektrikhana video. It’s certain to be mind-blowing!

Ken Block’s Audi Sport quattro Replica is Bonkers

This car was actually done in time for the SEMA show last year. Thanks to his busy schedule, however, Block hadn’t gotten a chance to test the new whip until now.

It’s basically the same setup that sat in the Borla booth at the big show in Sin City, though there have been some small changes here and there. For instance, the steering wheel has been swapped out, the giant e-brake handle has been relocated, and because Block wants to daily this in his hometown of Park City, there’s an actual parking brake!

RIP Ken Block

VIDEO: Ken Block Returns in ELECTRIKHANA, Sliding Through Las Vegas

The shriek of the electric motors and tortured howl of the tires is just otherworldly. If anything, the electric power of the Audi S1 HOONITRON allows him to do even more incredible things behind the wheel.

Backward drifts, reversing turns in mid-slide, even spinning in place. The nine-and-a-half-minute video includes all of the usual stunts and humor of his other videos. But it will take you at least three tries to watch it because you won’t believe what you just saw…
