Alpine has unveiled its first ‘lifestyle’ model – the concept for the much-anticipated A290.

The exciting new car made its debut at an historic hangar in Bristol – birthplace of Concorde, the Anglo-French supersonic airliner.

Alpine’s Formula one drivers, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who are helping to develop the A290, put the show car through its paces.

Kick-starting the sporty French brand’s push to become mainstream,the EV hot hatch is based on its cousin, the upcoming Renault 5 EV.

Alpine CEO, Laurent Rossi, described the A290 as the first page of a new chapter.

“This car will have a big mission,” he said. “It will have to perpetuate the racing brand legacy of Alpine. The brand is born from racing, made by racers, for racers at heart.”

Despite its more rounded shape, there’s no hiding the Alpine’s DNA. Other differences include a duck-tail-style rear spoiler, a small lip on the bootlid and Alpine’s four-light signature up front.

Even though it will share its basic underpinnings with the Renault 5 EV, it’s expected the Alpine will get a power boost and a more dynamic set-up.

Alpine currently only sells the A110 sports car, but is planning to launch the A290, alongside the successor to the A110, plus an all-new crossover.

Polestar UK opens new Head Office at Bicester Heritage

Swedish electric performance car brand Polestar has opened its new head office at the Bicester Heritage complex in north Oxfordshire.

A new Polestar Space based in the same two-storey building will open in January 2023.

The Polestar Space will be located on the ground floor and offer a welcoming environment for customers to experience and test drive Polestar EVs. The location will also host exclusive customer events.

As well as the popular Polestar 2, an awesome Polestar 1 and stunning Polestar Precept (it will evolve into Polestar 5) were on display in the showroom for the launch event.

“With the opening of our first UK commercial Head Office, Polestar is demonstrating the importance of the market to its growth globally,” said Jonathan Goodman, Head of Polestar UK.

“With more than 11,000 Polestar cars now on our roads, this also reflects the rate of pure EV adoption increasing enormously in the UK.

 After a coronavirus-forced two-year hiatus, the New York International Auto Show returned to the recently expanded Jacob K. Javits Center this past April. Billed as America’s longest-running auto show (first held at the original Madison Square Garden on November 3, 1900!), the Big Apple’s celebration of all things automotive has included thousands of fascinating, futuristic one-off concepts and special show cars and trucks through the years. My first visit to the NYIAS was as a wide-eyed, starstruck teenager in 1990. Attending that show – an experience courtesy of and shared with my dad – was a life-changing event. Until I got my first digital camera in the mid-2000s, I came home each time with pockets filled with spent rolls of 35-mm film, the results of which often (but not always) made it into my many photo albums.

An electrifying vision, The BUICK WILDCAT EV CONCEPT offers a first look at brand’s new design direction as it transitions to an all-electric future.


For nearly 70 years, the Wildcat name has been reserved for innovative, progressive Buick concept vehicles that push the boundaries of design and technology. Like the new Wildcat EV concept, the first Wildcat — introduced in 1953 — was a show vehicle that previewed next-generation Buick design. The Wildcat II and III concepts followed in 1954 and 1955, respectively, and the designs of all were overseen by legendary chief designer Harley Earl. In 1985, another Wildcat concept debuted. It was a futuristically styled, mid-engine and AWD supercar developed to showcase new engine technologies.

The Wildcat EV was developed to convey the all-new design language that will influence Buick production models for the foreseeable future. Buick’s new tri-shield logo, mounted prominently on the body front and rear, symbolizes the design transformation and new production models will wear it starting next year.

“The Wildcat EV concept represents the real design future for the brand,” said Sharon Gauci, executive director, Global Buick and GMC Design. “Buick has always been forward looking and this expression is a glimpse of where we’re going, and the optimism we have for the limitless possibilities of an electric future.”

The BUICK WILDCAT EV CONCEPT also introduces a new, expressive face for Buick, distinguished by a bold, forward-leaning front-end appearance that features a low-mounted, trapezoidal grille. Sharp, high-mounted and horizontal check mark-shaped lighting flanks the vehicle, while the outer edges of the grille house primary lighting. The lighting elements are configured to create a unique welcome choreography when the driver approaches.

Further, the Wildcat — a 2 2 coupe — strikes a powerful, expressive presence, with an all-new, laid-back proportion complemented by a low, wide stance. The windshield wraps around and flows into the side glass, which tapers dramatically with the fast roofline to accentuate the aggressive profile.

“From every angle, the vehicle looks like it’s ready to pounce,” said Bob Boniface, director, Global Buick Design. “It’s the result of careful attention to the proportions and sculptural beauty derived from the intersection of forms, not lines.”

BUICK WILDCAT EV CONCEPT additional exterior design highlights:

  • Distinctive semi-swing doors for easy entry and exit.
  • Unique aluminum trim that appears to flow seamlessly into the interior seat structures.
  • Micro-LED lighting technology and thin-beam projector lenses for the front lighting.
  • Blade-style taillights embedded in the roof’s sail panels, culminating in check mark-style horizontal lamps that echo the front lighting signature.
  • An external “state of charge” indicator visible in the exterior hatchback glass.
  • Jet Age-inspired 18-spoke “turbine” wheels.

“The more you look at the Wildcat EV concept, the more the details reveal themselves,” said Boniface. “Its timeless proportions acknowledge the brand’s rich design legacy, while our latest technology moves you forward.”

BUICK WILDCAT EV CONCEPT“It’s a space intended to strike an emotional chord,” said Therese Pinazzo, Buick exterior and interior design manager. “It is defined by simple, graceful forms that convey balance, harmony and a feeling of warmth.”

The 2 2 configuration, delineated by a prominent console that extends from the base of the instrument panel to the rear seating area, uses unique graphic and color contrasts to create the perception of visually floating elements intended to accentuate the cabin’s lightweight feel and spaciousness.

Color plays an important role in the warmth and comfort the interior conveys. Legato Green flows through the cabin and is accented with brushed or polished aluminum trim. Lively orange elements, including the seat belts, also add visual distinction. Additional interior design elements include cockpit-style seats with cantilevered headrests that appear to be floating, and a lightweight, flat-bottom steering wheel. When it comes to technology integration and infotainment interaction, a sweeping touchscreen is the access point on the instrument panel, along with a complementing screen on the console.

Everything about the BUICK WILDCAT EV CONCEPT is intended to convey what’s possible — in design, technology and the transformative experience of EV mobility. The Wildcat is back!

Concept cars tend to live ephemeral lives. They appear at an event or two, create headlines if they’re lucky, and then disappear into the ether once they’re no longer of use. Some, however, attain legendary status. The 1960s in particular witnessed the emergence of the show-stopper as we know it, car manufacturers seeing the value of creating a one-off purely to foretell what’s coming down the road and broadcast styling trends and create a little excitement ahead of launching a new model.

Gathered here from that era are our favorites of the breed. Some created a lasting legacy and are proudly displayed in factory museums. Others led hard lives but were later restored prior to hitting the concours circuit. A few, however, didn’t see out the decade, leaving only photographs and old magazines behind as reminders that they ever existed. All were memorable—and most definitely groovy – which is why we love them still.
