Like a lot of current motorcyclists, my first experience of two wheels was when my dad first took me for a pillion ride. That led to a lifelong love of riding bikes, and it’s an essential route into motorcycling, but back in those days, safey kit was hard to find. The new Duchinni Speed Racer textile jacket shows how far things have progressed.
Rather than risking a few early trips in a leather jacket bought at the local market, the Speed Racer has the same safety features you’d get in an adult version. So that means it’s rated AA for safety with a 600D fabric outer, and a set of CE-approved shoulder and elbow armour, along with a back protector.
There’s no good excuse for not protecting your children to a decent level, even if they’re only riding pillion occasionally. I might not agree with some adults nipping out in a t-shirt, shorts and trainers during warm weather, but at least I can accept they’re old enough to make their own decisions.
Especially when it’s not that expensive. The Duchinni Speed Racer jacket costs £119.99, and comes in sizes XS-XL, which roughly equates as XS = 6-8 years, SM = 8-10 years, ME = 10-12 years, LG = 12-14 years, and XL = 14-16 years).
Duchinni have also been producing a full range of motorcycle kit for kids and teenagers for a few years now, with the jackets starting from £99.99, including the Jago and Michigan. Plus boots, gloves and trousers.
Duchinni kit is available from various retailers, including Halfords, and Ghost Bikes. You can also find your nearest local Duchinni stockist via this handy map.
