Lamborghini Countach

It might not be a tennis player adjusting her behind, but the Lamborghini Countach has been crowned the all-time favourite pin-up poster car among followers of The British Motor Show.

The striking Marcello Gandini masterpiece was the most popular poster car of the show’s Facebook followers, closely pursued by the Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 959 – and who (of a certain age) doesn’t remember flicking through them on the rails in the poster shops?

“Of course, this was just a bit of fun, but it seems that around one in five car fans have had a Countach Blu-Tacked above their bed, and it’s that love of cars that really drives the passion behind The British Motor Show,” said The British Motor Show CEO, Andy Entwistle.

The organisers of The British Motor Show (August 19-22) say it promises to be the brightest, most engaging and most interactive automotive event of 2021, offering terrific value at just £18.50 a ticket, or £37 for a family of four.

TANGERINE DREAM: ’21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDER

It’s fast, it’s furious and an assault on the senses. And now with just rear-wheel drive, the TANGERINE DREAM: ’21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDER is even more of a thrill ride, blogs Howard Walker.

TANGERINE DREAM: '21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDER

We all know about endorphins. They’re those spunky polypeptides produced by the body that stimulate feelings of immense pleasure and well-being. Eating chocolate and drinking wine are great endorphin releasers. Of course, you knew that.

But there’s another source of endorphin production that’s far more effective than any Godiva or Pinot Noir. Let me introduce you to the newest offering from Automobili Lamborghini, the tangerine dream machine that’s this Hurácan EVO RWD Spyder.

The endorphins this 610-horsepower, V10-engined bundle of joy can deliver are up there with hearing Pavarotti hitting the high notes on Nessun Dorma, quaffing a 1961 Château Latour, or being handed a basketful of kittens to cuddle. There really aren’t enough superlatives in Webster’s to adequately describe the way this hurricane-force Hurácan can slingshot itself off the line, dragster-style.TANGERINE DREAM: '21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDERAnd nothing prepares you for the mayhem as this Angry Bird rocketship spins its rear wheels like a Fourth of July pinwheel and lunge at the horizon in a smokey haze of flambe’d rubber. I’ve driven plenty of super-fast cars before; this one scared the snot out of me!

Time, perhaps, for a few Cliffs Notes on the raging bull from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Introduced way back in 2014, the Hurácan replaced the much-loved Gallardo as the first rung on the ladder of Lamborghini ownership. Over the years it has evolved, first into the Hurácan Performante, then the EVO. But the key here is that it always stuck with all-wheel drive to help wrangle all that power – and keep drivers out of the hedgerows. For purists, having all-wheel drive has been a bone of contention. They argued that somehow it de-sensitized the car, taking away some of the raw, driver-focused, laser-precise responses. Last year however, the wraps came off the Hurácan EVO RWD, with that honking mid-mounted 5.2-liter V10 spinning just the rear rims. Lighter, more nimble, more tail-happy, it instantly became the most fun-driving, old-school Lambo you could buy. And talking of lira, the base price of our TANGERINE DREAM: ’21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDER came in at $229,428, or around $15,000 less than the $214,366 Coupe. A raft of must-have options will take the sticker north of $250,000.

But toggle a switch and that tight-fitting canvas roof powers back, disappearing beneath a hard cover in a mere 17 seconds, and at speeds up to 31mph. Aaaah, sunshine. Top down, the Hurácan makes a terrific convertible, with hardly any wind buffeting, even at close to triple-digit velocities. And with the top dropped, it’s all the better for inhaling that insane, manic, Guns N’ Roses V10 soundtrack.

TANGERINE DREAM: '21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDERInside, you sit in hip-hugging, carbon-fiber-shelled seats, gripping a wheel that looks straight out of a racecar. And the theater that goes into operating this orange projectile is just so Italian. Flick up a big red flap to hit the start button, pull back on an oversized lever to engage reverse, shift gears with paddle shifters the size of elephant ears; Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick would just feel right at home!

TANGERINE DREAM: '21 HURÁCAN EVO RWD SPYDERDrive it like you stole it and this newest Hurácan is a pure, brutal, passionate assault on the senses. In today’s hypercar world, zero-to-60 in 3.3 seconds is nothing special – there are kid-toting Teslas that can get there in 2.4 seconds, as will the all-wheel-drive Hurácan EVO. But the fury of the RWD’s acceleration, the brutal 8,700rpm upshifts and that truly spine-tingling, hairs-on-the-back-of-your neck-raising soundtrack makes it feel like the Starship Enterprise going to warp speed. Rear-drive only boosts those endorphins. The way the car squirms under hard acceleration, the way the back-end can be nudged out of line on a tight corner. Everything feels alive, animate, alert, and dialed up to 11. Yet, for me, the beauty of this beast is that it can all be dialed back for moments of less frenetic driving. Select “Strada” mode and the exhaust calms, the suspension softens, and the shifts on the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic turn Teflon-smooth.Here’s without doubt, the best all-round Lamborghini I’ve driven; a passionate, thrilling, open-top supercar you could actually use as a daily driver. And, when it comes to an endorphin release, it’s way better than chocolate.

DENDROBIUM D-1 E-HYPERCAR: PLUG & PLAY @ 200-PLUS MPH!

DENDROBIUM D-1 E-HYPERCAR: PLUG & PLAY @ 200-PLUS MPH!

The Dendrobium D-1 e-hypercar is confirmed for development and production in UK and debut presentation at Salon Privé.

DENDROBIUM D-1 E-HYPERCAR: PLUG & PLAY @ 200-PLUS MPH!After the highly successful international introduction at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2017 and subsequent presentations throughout Europe and the Far East, the Dendrobium D-1 electric hypercar has taken its next steps towards production with an all-new company, Dendrobium Automotive Limited, now established in the UK.  The Dendrobium D-1 will be officially presented in public for the first time in the UK at Salon Privé, which takes place in the grounds of the Blenheim Palace from August 30th – September 1st.

The Dendrobium D-1 was originally a basic electric hypercar design concept, created in the mid-1990s, by Vanda Electrics, a Singaporean product design company. In 2016 the sketched designs were presented to UK engineering and Formula 1™ company, Williams Advanced Engineering with a brief for them to create a working show car integrating many features of the car which would appear on the production version to be presented at Geneva. A uniquely qualified management team has now been recruited to take the Dendrobium D-1 into its next phase of development.

Nigel Gordon-Stewart is Chairman and CEO of Dendrobium Automotive Limited. Gordon-Stewart has been working in the premium and supercar markets since 1989. He is best known for the sales and marketing of the McLaren F1 and subsequently as Sales & Marketing Director of Automobili Lamborghini SpA reintroducing the Super Veloce brand with the Diablo SV and SVR. He was later an Associate Director to the Board at Group Lotus Plc among other senior roles.

“Dendrobium Automotive is one of the most exciting businesses I’ve ever been involved with.” commented Gordon-Stewart. “Using the very latest technology, we are developing, what will be, the most impressive all-electric hypercar. We are designing our own in-house all-electric powertrain and we plan to use our own power storage cells moving to Solid State as and when the technology is reliable and financially viable. We are developing unique cabling and connector systems as well as our own complete vehicle integration and ADAS hardware and software. From a technical perspective, the D-1 will be a British engineering tour-de-force.”

DENDROBIUM D-1 E-HYPERCAR: PLUG & PLAY @ 200-PLUS MPH!The specification targets of the D-1 are as impressive as you’d expect from a hypercar in this sector: 1,800 horsepower; 2,000 NM and a target weight of 1,750 kgs yet it must represent the true feel of a supercar, not big and heavy. Performance will be very impressive and as linear as possible in its delivery, re-writing the rules for the experience of hypercar ownership. “The car is all carbon fibre, advanced composites and alloys which are superlight and super strong,” stated Jens Sverdrup, Member of the Board of Dendrobium Automotive Limited. Sverdrup has a highly successful background in the supercar industry having worked with Lamborghini, Ferrari and Pagani but is best known for establishing the Koenigsegg brand on the map to the extent that it’s now one of the most desirable and highly valued brands in the supercar sector. Recently he’s been responsible for raising Rimac Automobili’s profile globally.

“The construction of the D-1 is based on a unique Protocell carbon tub which possesses future adaptability for further generations of Dendrobium e-performance cars. Apart from advanced vehicle technology, the D-1 has enormous drama and presence thanks to our unique Bio-Aerial Locomotion door and roof opening system, which was inspired by the Dendrobium name. A lot more details will be revealed over the coming months, not the least of which will be the D-1’s impressive range and rapid charge time. You can be assured that the Dendrobium brand will become synonymous with the most exciting and technically sophisticated e-hypercars on the market and available globally.”

“Although all the Dendrobium team has automotive blood running in their veins, we are essentially a technology company developing ultra-performance EV and PHEV cars, systems and components,” continued Gordon-Stewart. “Our Advisory Board is chaired by Michael Kimberley who created Lotus Engineering back in 1978 with Colin Chapman which has provided engineering consultancy and technology services throughout the automotive industry with clients from Toyota to Aston Martin.”
