New GrandSphere Concept’s Interior Is Futuristically Modern

This impressive sedan concept is the first of three planned to preview Audi’s new luxury-class models.

New Direction

These days, Audi is busy transitioning its internal-combustion-powered lineup into EVs, but it’s also working on something a bit less shocking – three new “luxury class” concepts, all with “Sphere” in their names, which are designed to preview the next generation of Audi’s design language. First up we have the GrandSphere, which is destined to replace the A8 atop the automaker’s lineup.

Futuristic Cabin

The GrandSphere’s cabin is more luxury airport lounge than automobile, but there’s a very good reason for that – it’s designed to preview the future of autonomous driving. The design is certainly futuristic, with swoopy lines and comfy-looking seats along with a steering wheel that disappears when the car is driving itself.

MTM Brings Stage 4 Boost to the RS6, RS7, and the RS Q8

MTM has outdone themselves in creating an upgrade package for Audi’s RS models that would bump the power past the 1,000-horsepower threshold!

A Lot More Power

German specialty tuner MTM has been taking factory Audis and giving them even more performance and capability for quite some time. And they’ve now introduced a Stage 4 power upgrade for the Audis RS6 Avant, RS7 Sportback, and the RS Q8. It should go without saying that RS models are some of the best high-performance machines in the world. But the folks at MTM seem to believe they could use a lot more power!

Lower Stages

The tuner has previously been offering Stage 1, 2, and 3 upgrades for these Audi RS models. These various levels bring different levels of added power to the vehicles. Stage 1 bumps the power output up to 787 and costs $10,999. Stage 2 will provide customers with 812 horses, with a price tag of $15,799. And the Stage 3 upgrade reaches 962 horsepower at $29,999.

Performance Gains?

The Stage 4 MTM tune achieves over 1,000 horsepower with a few seemingly simple modifications. The performance gains are the result of custom turbochargers and a remapped ECU. Other options are available through MTM, including custom exhaust systems, wheel spacers, among other cosmetic modifications. MTM has not announced official acceleration numbers for the kit, but it’s hard to imagine these already efficient performance vehicles would be able to reach significantly higher numbers than they do in stock form. Especially if there are no upgrades to the powertrain.

Going Electric

With a number of automakers pledging to ditch internal combustion engines for electric powerplants in recent months, Audi‘s recent announcement that it too was following suit doesn’t really come as a huge surprise. It certainly comes as a disappointment for fans of old-fashioned powerplants, however but as we’ve seen from the automaker already, it isn’t all bad, either.

Moving Forward

While some automakers rest on their laurels, Audi has cranked out a number of EV products recently. That includes the new e-tron GT, e-tron Quattro, Q4 e-tron and most recently, the A6 e-tron concept, with many more in development.

Cutoff Date

Now comes news that Audi plans to launch its very last new internal combustion-powered model in 2026. From that point forward, every new vehicle from the automaker will be all-electric, though Audi will let all of its ICE vehicles continue to live through the end of their planned life cycles.

Many Unknowns

That means that fans of Audi ICE vehicles won’t have to worry about rushing out to buy their next car or crossover any time soon, at least. Regardless, pegging an actual end date for production of those vehicles isn’t terribly easy at the moment, as there are many unknowns.

Uncertain Future

The current A4 and A6 will likely soldier on until 2030, while the future of vehicles like the TT and R8 are fairly murky altogether. Many believe the A1 will get chopped from the lineup as well, since Volkswagen already offers a host of similar vehicles with electric power.

Last One?

Most believe that the A3 will be the very last internal combustion engine-powered Audi, but that remains to be seen. Currently, the next-gen model is due around 2026, when the new ninth-generation VW Golf that it will be based on launches.

Time to Plot

We have to imagine that Audi will cook up something special to bid farewell to the ICE engine, especially since it makes so many good ones. But in the meantime, now might be the perfect time to begin plotting your next purchase if you aren’t quite ready to go electric in the coming years.

Improving Audi’s best V6 driver’s car

The RS5 has always been a rather special car for Audi enthusiasts. It combines the handsome proportions of Audi’s A5 coupe, with an array of trick RS-bits. More powerful engines. Active differentials. Purposeful bodywork. These are all elements that enhance the A5 and turn it into an RS5. And for the 2021 model year, Audi has done it again: restyling the RS5 and making it even better to look at.  

Taking weight, off the top

Its wider fenders have always been an integral feature of RS5, gifting it a more purposeful stance. But the really big news is a composite roof option. This color-contrasting roof not only adds to the aesthetic appeal, it also lowers the RS5’s center of gravity. How? By being 6.6lb lighter than the aluminum roof. That might not sound like much, but any weight saving at the RS5’s highest point, has a notable influence of its dynamic balance.

Redesigned front-end

Audi has given the 2021 model year RS5 coupe a great deal more rear-view mirror presence, by adding a new grille design. The single-frame grille is more on-trend with Audi’s latest design language and features a hexagon mesh pattern. Not all the grille slots are active cooling paths, with some being blocked-off, to improve aerodynamics. The new RS5 coupe has a drag index of only 0.32 and its shapelier front bumper perfectly balances the look of that larger grille surface.

It is even wider than before

The new RS5 has Matrix-enabled taillights, which mean you get more effectively sequence-pulsing turn-signal indicators, alerting other road users of your intentions. Again, the defined RS5 stance is clearly evident and for the 2021 model year car, Audi has managed to make it 0.6-inches wider at each side, thanks to even more elaborately flared fenders. Those bulging wheel arches and fenders, draw their inspiration from the original Audi performance car, the brand’s seminal ur-Quattro, launched back in 1984.

Six-cylinder with all the tech you could imagine

The RS5’s two turbochargers are capable of delivering a maximum boost pressure of 1.5-bar and mechanical drag on the peripheral systems is low. For example, the V6 engine’s oil pump is active, and only builds and sustains the required level of pressure, instead of running at surplus capacity, all of the time. The crankshaft rotates on low-friction roller bearings and trick valve-timing adjusts the camshaft profile. At peak throttle demand, the 2.9-liter V6’s valve lift can increase from 0.2 – to 0.4-inches.

Loves to carve along mountain roads

Dynamic dampers keep the RS5 balanced and agile to driver inputs, even on challenging roads. The entire mechanical package is engineered to harmonize. Although the turbocharged V6 engine is very powerful, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission, assist in harnessing its performance. The end result is an immersive driving experience.

Exotic brake rotor material – on request

At 3763lb, the RS5 coupe is not a light car. But Audi has ensured that its braking performance always remains true, giving the driver total confidence, no matter what the cornering gradient profile is. Carbon-fiber ceramic rotors are an option for the front-axle braking system, actuated by six-piston calipers. These composite rotors measure a massive 15.7-inches in size, yet they reduce unsprung weight by 14.3lb, delivering more powerful braking and lower rotational component mass.

World’s Quickest

Many often ask – what’s the most powerful, fastest, quickest, or best of any particular automotive model. And in the case of Audi’s RS3, that answer is easy – it’s this beastly build from Iroz Motorsport and its namesake, Hank Iroz. Recently featured over at DSport Magazine, this is the world’s quickest Audi RS3, thanks mostly to the ridiculous 1,350 horsepower it puts down at the wheels.

Humble Beginnings

Iroz’s specialty is building incredibly fast Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen vehicles, though he has experience wrenching on other European rides as well. But this RS3 is his crowning achievement. Iroz purchased the car new in 2017, knowing from the start that he was going to transform it into a total track terror.

DIY

Iroz’s goal from day one was to get the car to run sevens in the quarter-mile, which is obviously not an easy feat for any car, let alone the RS3, given its lack of aftermarket support at the time. Thus, Iroz simply made most of the parts himself, giving the inline-five cylinder mill his own Stage 3 performance upgrade that starts with a built bottom end.

Big Power

To that sturdy base, Iroz added a Xona Rotor 105/69 turbo, ESLM fuel pump, 2,600cc injectors, ethanol injection, and nitrous. Pushing a ridiculous 52 psi of boost, the fortified I-5 put down an insane 1,350 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque on the dyno.

Off the Trailer

As one might imagine, if you can get all that power to the ground, it’s going to result in impressive track performance. In this case, that’s precisely what happened – the RS3 ripped off a 7.989-second pass on its very first run. Obviously, it took a lot of work to make that happen, but the car clearly has more in it, too.

No Rest

Since its completion, Iroz’s RS3 has also beaten Ken Block’s Hoonicorn in a drag race, which is something that not many cars can say. Regardless, if you want to be the best and stay the best, you can’t rest on your laurels, and it doesn’t sound like that will be the case with the world’s quickest RS3.

Pushing the Envelope

Iroz has big plans for his ride, including a new turbo and cam that will hopefully help make it even quicker. It may seem ludicrous to some, but in reality, everyone is gunning for the top. To stay there, Iroz has to keep pushing the envelope, and that’s precisely what he plans to do.
