’57 CORVETTE FUELIE: BUILT TO RACE!

In 1957, the Corvette was the first production American car powered by an engine producing one-horsepower-per-cubic-inch – 283 cubic inches, 283 horsepower – and fitted with an optional Rochester Ramjet Fuel Injection engine. Checking off the right boxes could net you with a four-speed transmission and Positraction rear axle. The ’57 Corvette is respected worldwide as one of the most significant performance models in the marque’s more than seven-decade history. By offering a select number of Regular Production Options (RPO), a ’57 Corvette could be optioned specifically for road racing.

“The 1957 Fuel Injection Corvette reinforced Chevrolet’s high-performance image and shaped the future of the Corvette as America’s Sports Car. Fuel-injected 1957-1962 Corvettes dominated SCCA B/Production racing for years,” said Kenneth Kayser, right, retired GM engineer, ’57 Corvette Fuelie specialist, author, and TEAM ZORA USA’s Corvette Racing Historian.

“On May 19th, 1957, three 1957 Fuel Injection ‘customer’ racecars driven by Dr. Dick Thompson, Carroll Shelby and Bill Howe Jr., finished First, Second and Third, respectively, at the SCCA Regional at Cumberland, MD. One week later at the SCCA Nationals at Elkhart Lake, WI, four B/Production Corvettes, led by Jim Jeffords, finished 1-2-3-4! Dick Thompson and his Fuel Injection 1957 Corvette would win SCCA’s coveted National Champion honors in 1957,” added Kayser.

FLY LIKE A (GURNEY) EAGLE!

Powered by a Roush-built 725 horsepower four-cam Turbo Ford engine, Indy Car owner Mike Moss loves nothing more than to FLY LIKE A (GURNEY) EAGLE!

FLY LIKE A (GURNEY) EAGLE!

Michael “Mike” Moss has elevated multi-tasking to an art form! An HSR & SVRA Historic sportscar racer, Mike has three vintage Indy 500 open-wheelers. While his favorite is the 1969 (Olsonite #42) Gurney Santa Ana Eagle formerly driven by Denny “the Bear” Hulme at the 1969 Indy 500 and later by Swede Savage, Mike also owns the ex-Gordon Johncock Turbo Ford 1966 Gerhardt and ex-Bill Vukovich 1969 Mongoose, powered by a Turbo-Offy.

A member of the Sarasota Café Racers, Moss is the guiding force behind TEAM ZORA USA which will be campaigning his ’57 Corvette Fuelie in 1000 Miglia events in the USA and Italy in 2024-2025. Formed to celebrate America’s Sports Car and honor the legacy of its first Chief Engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov, he will co-drive the Fuel Injection Corvette with RM Motorsports’ Bud Bennett.

While the Corvette is being prepared for 1,000-mile road events, the Gurney Eagle’s Ford quad-cam engine was going through a complete overhaul and dyno testing at Roush. According to Roush’s Ron Sharp, the Eagle’s 2.65-liter/162 cubic inch four-cam, 32-valve turbocharged V-8 is putting out an un-stressed 725 horsepower.

The 1969 Gurney Eagle was designed by Tony Southgate who, prior to joining Dan Gurney’s AAR in 1967, had spent time at Lola working on the iconic T-70, later switching to Brabham. Southgate incorporated the basic Lotus 56 wedge design and Brabham front suspension in the Eagle, also known as the Santa Ana Eagle, referencing the AAR’s location, Santa Ana, CA.

FLY LIKE A (GURNEY) EAGLE!

Over a period of years and owners, this Eagle was powered by Gurney-Weslake stock-block Ford and small-block Chevy engines in addition an original Turbo quad-cam Ford that is currently supplying power. In 2006 it was restored to its original 1969 Indy debut condition, complete with Olsonite #42 livery. Mike Moss added it to his collection in August 2016, being the high-bidder at the RM Sotheby auction at Monterey. Moss has driven the Eagle in historic races and this year committed to a full engine overhaul at Roush. Looking like the day Denny Hulme drove it in the 1969 Indy 500, it remains a work of art created by an American racing legend: Dan Gurney.

“It’s almost too beautiful to race and as much as I love to FLY LIKE A (GURNEY) EAGLE! I think it may be time to ‘clip its wings’ and put it on display so the public can see and appreciate it as much as I have,” said Moss.

FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953

The Trident recalls the victories of the past – FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953 – with an eye to a new chapter in the history of motorsports.FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953

FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953

Seventy years have passed since the Italian Grand Prix on September 13, 1953, where Juan Manuel Fangio celebrated his first and only victory of the season in the final race at Monza, at the wheel of his Maserati A6GCM, above, leading Ascari #4 and Farina #6, in Ferrari F2s.

The Argentine ace, one of the greatest of all time together with colleagues of the caliber of Senna and Schumacher – Fangio ceded the crown of the most titled Formula 1 driver to the latter after almost 50 years.  After FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953, he took the Trident to the Olympus of the brands in the highest class of motorsport in 1954 and 1957, the year of El Chueco’s fifth and final world championship.

Seventy years ago, on the Brianza circuit, the curves of the temple of speed lit up for one final race, to wipe away a subdued season for the Argentine world champion. He would go on from that victory to win his second world title the following year.

An anniversary to remember – FANGIO/ MASERATI WINS MONZA IN 1953 – Maserati has once again become a major player with a carefully thought-out racing strategy. Historic racer Mike Moss, above, right, with the Trident‘s latest racecar, the MCXtrema. One of the 62 that will be built will have his name on it!

After its first year in Formula E, where Maserati took three podiums and one victory in the 100% electric series, the Modena-based brand announced its return to GT competitions: in July, at the 24 Hours of Spa, it unveiled its latest disruptive 621-horsepower track creation, dedicated to private teams and gentleman drivers, due to take part in the Fanatec GT2 European Series from the 2024 season.

With its constant longing for laurels, Maserati also unveiled during Monterey Car Week, the surprising MCXtrema, a track-only car for a select few – 62 to be precise – fans of uncompromising performance and outstanding design. It was designed and engineered to channel unique emotions exclusively on the racetrack!

Since its debut in the racing world – back in 1926, with Alfieri Maserati first in class at the Targa Florio in his Tipo 26, excellence in motorsport has been the hallmark of Maserati’s DNA. Its history is repeating with its aspiration to write major new chapters in the greatest classes in motorsports, where the Italian brand has been confirmed as one of the most prestigious brands that can guarantee the most distinctive performance, in its road cars and those designed for the track.

GOIN’ FAST; DOIN’ GOOD!

Historic racer and patriot Mike Moss is GOIN’ FAST; DOIN’ GOOD! supporting efforts to help Ukraine citizens and keep democracy and freedom alive!

GOIN’ FAST; DOIN’ GOOD!When he is not racing his Lola T70, Lola Can-Am car, or one of his vintage four-cam Ford-powered Indy 500 racecars, my friend and Sarasota Café Racer Mike Moss is spearheading OPERATION UKRAINE RELIEF, a joint military veteran & civilian organization. It’s essentially a continuation of OPERATION PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and his involvement in evacuating Americans and Afghans out of Afghanistan after the U.S. left and the country was turned over to the Taliban.

OPERATION UKRAINE RELIEF is staffed with industry leaders and former Green Berets, Rangers, SEALs, Marines and USAF personnel. Many are in Poland, Ukraine and surrounding nations, bringing medical and communications equipment to Ukraine citizens who desperately need to survive and support their nation. They have been instrumental in delivering Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink terminals to the Ukrainian military and have chartered aircraft and delivered hundreds of tons of medical relief to the Ukrainian people through their Ministry of Health.

OPERATION UKRAINE RELIEF is partnered with CROSS BORDER CIVILIANS FOUNDATION https://www.crossbordercivilians.org/home which provides humanitarian aid to civilians who are in, or evacuating from, conflict zones. It helps them provide the quickest way to aid those in need.
