Audi Sport: R8 Successor is ‘Biggest Wish,’ Performance Plug-in Hybrids Are Coming

Audi engineers really want to build an R8 successor, but before that, we’re bound to see some performance plug-in hybrids.

At the moment, Audi has just begun pivoting to its all-electric future, which means legendary models like the R8 — and its glorious V10 — are headed into the sunset. Fortunately, the internal-combustion party isn’t over just yet. There are still faster versions of the RS6 Avant on the way, and in a new interview with our friends at Autocar, Audi Sport managing director Sebastian Grams says enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to, including why building an R8 successor is his “biggest wish.”

In the piece, he touches on loads of interesting points, from how important noise is to enthusiasts, to Formula 1 cost caps, to the possibility of an electric TT. But here’s what really jumped out from Ingolstadt’s performance wing:

We are going in the direction of performance plug-in hybrid systems. This is what we are going for and I can tell you, this will be no less amazing than what you’re driving today. I personally believe that you will also have more opportunities to design the driving performance to be even cooler for the customer. 

Now obviously, I love the idea of a cooler driving experience, just like every enthusiast with a pulse. And to be brutally honest? My experience with electric performance cars has demonstrated that when you have wicked instant thrust, even things like the lack of a manual transmission and a wicked engine note can be forgiven. So I’d be happy to skip the whole plug-in hybrid step and go straight to weapons-grade green machines.

Where Should Audi Performance Go Next? (AudiWorld’s Take)

While the interview with Grams was informative, there wasn’t any discussion of the performance Audi I’d most like to see. Because I want to see a road-legal car derived from the history-making RS Q e-tron — and the timing is perfect for it. Seriously, just think about how crazy people went giving Porsche 911s the safari treatment. It got so popular that Stuttgart actually responded with a factory version. Even Lamborghini is making an off-road-focused supercar, in the form of the Huracán Sterrato. I’m telling you, there’s gold in them there hills.

And of all the companies making high-end sports cars today, which ones have a legacy that even approaches Audi when it comes to getting dirty? I mean, Group B anyone? Just imagine something built using what the engineers at Audi Sport learned running the RS Q e-tron in the Dakar Rally, and how cool that would be. If they could style it so it looked like the Quattro S1, I don’t believe they’d be able to make them fast enough. Porsche and Lamborghini might have beaten Audi to the market, sure. But going fully electric would be a game changer. Suddenly, every other manufacturer would be playing catch up.

Of course, there’s a reason that I’m a writer and not a product planner, and it’s easy to spend someone else’s money on research and development from the comfort of your keyboard. Report: Faster Audi RS6 Avant Versions On the Way

American Audi fans got lucky with the RS6 Avant. And it sounds like Ingolstadt has even more goodness in store.

When it was announced that the Audi RS6 Avant was actually coming to America, Four Rings fans rejoiced. Now sure, there’s no lack of high-horsepower hardware available on our shores. But when it comes to fast wagons? Domestic enthusiasts have too often gotten the shaft. So this was far from a sure thing. Fortunately, Ingolstadt delivered — and a new report from our friends at Australia’s Wheels says even hotter versions are on the way.

Better still, the info isn’t credited to an unnamed source, like so much other reportage on automotive news. Rather, vague as it may be, this tidbit comes straight from A6 and R8 spokesperson Eva Stania. Because when Wheels asked about the possibility of a weapons-grade RS6 Avant, Stania replied:  “You drove the RS6 C7 as a Performance. We recently launched the R8 RWD as a Performance, so you can be pretty sure that we will follow up the Performance strategy.”

Of course, any specifics about timing and specs are still murky. But other — yup, unnamed — sources seemed to indicate there will be more than one hot rod variant of the lust-worthy longroof for well-heeled enthusiasts to choose from. We could see the first version by the end of the year, and the range-topping model will arrive closer to 2025, toward the end of this generation’s production run. All of which tracks, given Audi’s history with models like the R8 Performance.

As for how much power each model will make? I think it’s reasonable to expect that both models will make more than Mercedes’ 603-horsepower E63 AMG wagon, and less that the 690-horsepower Panamera Sport Turismo from corporate cousin Porsche. So if I was forced to make a guess? I’d say 620 for Performance model A, and 675 from Performance model B. Sound reasonable? Hit me up and let me know!

Pacific German and VF Engineering Build Monster RS6 Avant

A slew of wicked RS6 Avant builds have appeared since the weapons-grade wagon debuted. This might be the quickest yet.

Along with Rule 34, Betteridge’s law of headlines is one of my favorite internet maxims. To refresh your memory, it states: “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.” And while my experience has found it to be spookily accurate, this recent video from our friends over at Auditography make me think it might not be infallible. Because the title of this video asks whether this weapons-grade Audi RS6 Avant is the world’s fastest. And with a blistering zero-to-60 time of 2.7 seconds? The answer could very well be yes.

Built as a collaboration between Pacific German and VF Engineering, this one-of-one monster is packing a laundry list of performance upgrades. Most notably, the factory snails have been swapped for a pair of fat TTE turbos, the ECU has been treated to a Stage 3 upgrade from VF Engineering,  and upgraded intercoolers  come courtesy of the frosty folks over at CSF Racing. According to the video, that means this vicious longroof is good for a whopping 1,000-plus horsepower and earth-twisting 750 lb-ft of torque.

Keep your foot buried, and all that poke is said to translate to a top speed north of 210 mph. But thanks to a body kit from Maxton Design, a slick red, white and black  livery, and bespoke 22-inch brushed bronze wheels, this RS6 Avant looks the business even if it’s standing still. Everything under the hood looks quite tidy as well, and unless you’re an accomplished Audi mechanic, you might think this baby remained just as Ingolstadt intended. Given that my mechanical exploits have gone over about as well as a fork in a microwave, the details are lost on me.

As to the claim that this is the fasted example of Audi’s luxury longroof on the planet, however, I can make a more knowledgeable assessment. Because I’ve been following the news on the RS6 Avant since long before they started turning up wrecked, and while I’ve seen several red-hot examples, this does seem to outshine them. ABT-Sportline’s version is good for 740 horsepower and a 3.2 second zero to 60 time, this 900-horsepower model is said to be just shy of the three-second mark, and even the mighty MTM Stage 4 project — with its insane 1,001 and 921 lb-ft of torque — is said to hit 60 in 2.8 seconds.
