NASH-HEALEY: ANGLO-AMERICAN-ITALIAN SPORTS CAR

The 1951-1954 NASH-HEALEY: ANGLO-AMERICAN-ITALIAN SPORTS CAR beat the Corvette to the marketplace, but only lasted four model years.

NASH-HEALEY: ANGLO-AMERICAN-ITALIAN SPORTS CARWhen you think of historic Le Mans champions, you picture Porsches, Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Jaguars howling down the Mulsanne straight. But in 1952, a Nash Inline-Six-powered Nash-Healey lightweight racer bested all of those greats, earning a class win and third place overall behind the dominant Mercedes-Benz 300 Gullwing SLs. Over the years, the Inline-Six-cylinder Nash engine was available with dual and tri-power carburetion.

That year was the best showing of the Nash-Healey in four consecutive outings at Le Mans, but there’s no denying the marque’s place in sports car history. Today, the production-version Nash-Healey roadsters, below, and Le Mans coupes, above, styled by Pininfarina, are highly collectible and trade for between $40,000 on the low end to north of $100,000 depending on condition. Values for these low-production sports cars have held steady over the last decade, but interest remains strong for nice examples, judging from recent auction sales.

Despite a total production run of 506 cars, they seem to turn up for sale fairly often. Sarasota Cafe Racer Howard Mintz owns the red coupe, while the roadster is one of 104 first series, alloy-bodied Nash-Healey Le Mans Roadsters. Few survive today. Fewer still are as appealing as this one in Nicola Bulgari’s NB CENTER FOR AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE in Allentown, PA.

ON TRACK W/FLORIDA’S SARASOTA CAFÉ RACERS!ON TRACK W/FLORIDA’S SARASOTA CAFÉ RACERS!Few enthusiast events have the appeal of the Goodwood Revival, and one of ON TRACK W/FLORIDA’S SARASOTA CAFÉ RACERS! Howard Mintz just came back from an exhilarating trip to Goodwood. It included riding “shotgun” with vintage racing car and Ford GT collector Gary Bartlett in his GT40 Mark III, the first customer car of seven built, up the iconic hill! A while back, Howard had struck up a relationship with Gary at Amelia Island, and Gary promised him a ride in his GT40 if he came to the Revival. Gary’s Mark III, chassis #1103, has been beautifully restored to its original 1969 condition and is kept in England for vintage racing events.

Michael McKee and Jeff Cripe (along with friend Paul Azan) will be racing Mike’s #169 BMW (ITR Class) this Saturday, Sept. 20th, in the SCCA Four-Hour Enduro under the lights at Daytona. SCCA is racing all weekend long with one stream for each day.  But be sure to tune in for their Enduro main event at 5 pm Saturday.

TEAM ZORA USA @ MONZA

The Three Mossketeers – Mike Moss, John Cutrone & Hank Gruenberg – all members of the Sarasota Café Racers, spend a week in Italy preparing for the 2025 Mille Miglia. They represent TEAM ZORA USA @ MONZA!

TEAM ZORA USA @ MONZA!Similar to a travel industry FAM (familiarization) trip, The Spirit of Zora ’57 FI Corvette driver Mike Moss and TEAM ZORA USA teammate, John Cutrone were joined by Hank “Tifosi” Gruenberg on this dream trip: Milano to Monza to Modena. As guests of Maserati Corse, the motorsport soul of the luxury Italian carmaker, the Mossketeers had all-access creds for the Fanatec GT World Challenge Race, and an exclusive test session of the new Maserati MCXtrema racecar at Monza, Italy’s Temple of Speed.

The trip was curated by Cutrone, to gather hospitality, food & wine information as he will be managing TEAM ZORA USA during the Mille Miglia He is creating an agenda for Mike Moss and co-driver Bud Bennett who will be traveling the historic Brescia-Rome-Brescia route. Gruenberg, an experienced Ferrari driver will be sharing his driving and luxury goods shopping experiences in Italy with the Team.

TEAM ZORA USA @ MONZA!Monza and Maserati racing were the trio from Sarasota, FL’s prime attractions. Mike is one of the lucky 62 who will be receiving a very limited production MCXtrema, and was at Monza for his first on-track experience with Andrea Bertolini, Maserati’s test and development driver. Bertolini, at just 19, was the youngest Scuderia Ferrari test driver, later moving up to work in the experimental and development labs at Ferrari. He won the WEC Championship (GTE AM) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015, and is currently Maserati’s Chief Test Driver.

After hot laps with Bertolini in an MCXtrema, Mike Moss shared his experiences trackside with Italian motorsports media and TEAM ZORA USA: Holy crap! That was the most exhilarating experience ever. The violence of the braking, flying through the S-turns, the G-forces. Unbelievable. Andrea was amazing. He brakes at the last possible point throwing you violently forward, and then turns like the car is pegged to the track. The car never slipped in the turns. It was a violent ride. A real racecar with a real race driver. Nothing can prepare you for what you go through.”

TEAM ZORA USA @ MONZA!

Clearly blown away by Bertolini’s driving expertise and the MCXtrema’s capability at speed on a legendary racetrack, it should be noted that Moss is an experienced Historic racing driver. He pilots his ex-Peter Revson Can-Am Lola T163 powered by a fuel-injected 513-inch aluminum big-block, Lola T70 Mark IIIB with a 432-inch Dart/Chevy, and a Ford quad-cam Turbo Gurney Santa Ana Eagle. This was not his first rodeo!

TEAM ZORA USA’s Monza/Maserati adventure is being followed by an exhilarating week of driving, visiting automotive museums and collections, and experiencing fine Italian food, wines and hotels in preparation for the Mille Miglia ‘Storica’ next year.

WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROAD

Thanks to Carlisle Auctions, a pair of spectacular WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROAD – Superlite SL-C and Ultima GTR – will cross the block for the first time!

WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROADJerry Jackson, a perfectionist car builder best known in the automotive industry for designing and engineering machinery for producing carbon fiber for carmakers like Lotus, built and owned the Race Car Replicas’ Superlite SL-C and owned the Ultima GTR. Equipped with air conditioning, he drove both WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROAD until passing away in December 2020, a victim of COVID. His estate has arranged with Carlisle Auctions to feature them in its Fall auction at Lakeland Linder Airport in Lakeland, FL on November 10-11.

Before becoming an avid road racing fan, he spent his youth in England drag racing a Jaguar-powered compact Ford Popular that he built with his teammate, Dave Cottingham. Known as the Purple Passion, the second time out it won Super Eliminator and by the third outing, it was running mid-13s at 107 mph. With a one-piece fiberglass flip front end, trunk lid, and doors fabricated by Jackson, right, and Cottingham, it was described as “faultless in every detail” by Brian Sparrow in Drag Racing & Hot Rod Magazine in the UK. It’s also featured in British Drag Racing, The Early Years, below, by Nicholas Petitt, published by VELOCE in 2011

WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROADDecades later, in 2013 while residing in Sarasota, Florida, he decided to once again build a car in his home garage. This time it was a Superlite SL-C coupe, top, with a modern chassis, road racing heritage, and infused with state-of-the-art technology. The kit was purchased from Race Car Replicas (RCR) a company with a background in IndyCar racing with a General Motors engine program and supplying parts for Le Mans cars. Jerry Jackson started the Superlite SL-C project in December 2013 and completed it in May, 2015.WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROAD With a typical weight distribution of 46% front and 54% rear and a weight of 2,400 pounds, the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive SL-C, delivers racecar performance on the road. The SL-C featured here that Jerry Jackson built tips the scales at 2,511 pounds. Powered by a fuel-injected 505-horsepower dry-sump 7-liter Corvette (LS7) 427 engine mated to a Graziano six-speed transaxle with limited-slip differential and Audi multi-plate competition clutch as used in a Lamborghini Aventador and Audi R8, performance is breathtaking!

The SL-C is just 43 inches off the ground, and with a wheelbase of 105 inches and an overall length of 174 inches, the 74-inch-wide winged coupe has approximately 4-5 inches of ground clearance. Chassis construction is of a hybrid all-aluminum tubular monocoque design with billet machined suspension mounts, uprights, and control arms. It’s fully TIG-welded. Stopping power comes from Brembo four-piston calipers with 355-mm front and 365-mm rear discs. Also featured are CAN-bus electrics with onboard diagnostics.

In addition to the costs of the complete RCR Kit, new GM engine, new Graziano transaxle, and assorted parts and hardware, Jackson invested 2,500 hours labor building the SL-C. And, that doesn’t include costs involved in having outside talent paint the fiberglass/carbon fiber body. Although fitted with a chassis, suspension, and powertrain suitable for racing, he regularly drove it to shows and Sarasota Café Racers lunches on. He was a longtime member of SCR.

WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROADPrior to building the SL-C coupe, Jackson had purchased a professionally built 2010 Ultima GTR, manufactured by Ultima Sports LTD in Hinkley Leicester in the UK. Also built on a tubular space frame chassis and bodied with a winged, lightweight fiberglass body, it is powered by a 390-horsepower small-block Chevy racing engine displacing 377 cubic inches. It weighs in at just 2,100 pounds and, like the Race car Replicas’ Superlite SL-C, delivers breathtaking road performance.

Displacing 6.2 liters, the small-block Chevy engine features an Eagle steel crank, rods and forged aluminum pistons, Competition Cams roller camshaft, and valvetrain, and is topped off with fuel injection with special mass-flow engine management. It’s mated to a five-speed Porsche G50 transaxle with a Porsche competition clutch. Stopping power comes from four-wheel 320-mm drilled and ventilated discs with AP Racing four-piston calipers. The original Ultima GTR was designed by Lee Noble and its performance – 0 to 100 mph to 0 in 9.4 seconds – is documented in the Guinness Book of Records!

Both WINGED WARRIORS FOR THE ROAD are air-conditioned and ready for the road!
