We take our first drive in the all-new 2024 Suzuki Swift small hatchback…

The Suzuki Swift is one of the world’s great automotive survivors. More than nine million have been sold in 40 years and the popular supermini is now into its fourth generation.

Even though SUVs of all sizes are dominating vehicle sales, Suzuki still thinks there’s a place for the five-door Swift.

In fact, as stalwarts such as the Ford Fiesta, Nissan Micra and Kia Rio disappear from the sector, there may even be an opportunity. After all, what are long-time Fiesta owners going to buy next time round – especially if they aren’t ready to go electric?

As ever, Suzuki’s answer is to offer a reasonably-priced, practical car that drives well and does what it says on the tin.

Starting at £18,699, the next-gen Swift doesn’t look unlike its predecessor at first sight.

Get a little closer and you’ll see that it’s bolder with a swathe of subtle design tweaks. It’s also fractionally longer and higher.

Evolutionary styling highlights include a sharp shoulder line that runs along the side of the car, L-shaped signature LED headlights, a piano black grille and sporty rear roof spoiler.

The back door handles are now conventionally mounted, instead of on the C-pillar, while the distinctive clamshell bonnet is shallower than before.

The new look works well and gives the Swift a more muscular stance. What’s more, it’s available in eight paint colours and four dual-tone colours, which utilises the car’s “floating roof”.

Inside, the cabin represents a big step-up for the Swift in terms of design and technology – two areas where the outgoing car was starting to show its age.

The centrepiece is the 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display with shortcuts below and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, complemented by a redesigned dashboard. It’s not cutting edge, but miles better than before.

Thankfully, Suzuki has also stuck with physical switches and buttons for the climate control and other necessities such as heated seats.

Sadly, one feature remains, and that’s the mass of scratchy black surfaces in the cabin.

There are just two trim levels – Motion and Ultra – and the impressive standard equipment list includes adaptive cruise control, sat nav, keyless entry and start, rear parking sensors, a rear camera, lane departure warning, rear-cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.

For launch, there is just one petrol engine available – a three-cylinder 1.2-litre mild hybrid (12V) producing 81bhp.

It’s about as powerful as the unit in the old car, but it’s now 8% more fuel efficient and produces less CO2 (as low as 99g/km).

On the road, it’s clear that the latest Swift is all about economy. It feels less peppy (0-62mph in 12.5 seconds) than the previous generation 1.0-litre petrol turbo and the manual gearbox has to be worked fairly hard to extract any meaningful performance.

That said, even though it only a five-speed, you don’t find yourself reaching for sixth because the ratios are well judged.

For the record, an automatic transmission will also be offered, along with a 4×4 option.

The new Swift rides well. It’s not the most sophisticated system out there, but does the job, while body lean is nicely controlled. There’s even some fun to be had.

And because it’s such a lightweight car, it feels nimble and responsive.

Overall, the cabin is more refined than its predecessor and the engine only makes itself known under heavy acceleration.

Economy of around 50mpg is easily achievable in mixed driving, so the claimed 64.2mpg could well be a possibility on a long run.

Inside, there’s just enough room for adults front and rear, while the boot is a respectable 265 litres (589 litres with the backs seats flat) and there are plenty of small storage spaces dotted around the cabin.

My only slight gripe is that the driving position is on the high side for my liking, but you do soon get used to it.

So, the all-new Suzuki Swift is better than ever, which is just as well because its rivals in the small hatchback sector include the big-selling Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo, Dacia Sandero and Skoda Fabia.

And if all that isn’t enough, there’s now another good reason to choose a Swift.

Customer service has always been a Suzuki strength. Now there’s extra peace of mind too, courtesy of the new extended warranty plan.

On top of the basic three-year/60,000 miles warranty, this is now extended to seven years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first), as long as scheduled services are booked within the Suzuki dealer network.

Verdict: The all-new Suzuki Swift is a real step-up from its predecessor and well worth a test drive. Honest, competitively priced, stylish, comfortable, easy to drive and economical, it now also offers more peace of mind.

Honda

Japanese and Korean car manufacturers have once again dominated an annual Top 10 of most reliable marques.

Honda topped the table, scoring an impressive 96.8/100 overall, according to Warrantywise – the UK’s leading extended car warranty provider,

The Reliability Index is compiled from more than 131,000 active extended car warranty plans between 2021 and 2022,

It ranks every car on a combination of factors, including the cost to carry out repairs and the frequency rate of those repairs.

With an impressive overall score of 96.8/100, Honda’s solid reputation for being ultra-dependable seems unshakeable, and as shown in previous Warrantywise data, the Honda Jazz was named the most reliable used car in this year’s Reliability Index.

Toyota came a close second, scoring 91.2/100 overall, followed by Suzuki.

We road test the new hybrid version of the Suzuki Vitara…

Priced from £13,999 – £21,999 when it was launched in 2015, the Suzuki Vitara was an impressive new entrant in the compact crossover sector. Sharp looks, good value for money, fun to drive and surprisingly capable off-road, it was a great buy.

Fast forward seven years and a new version of the Vitara has been introduced. The big change is that it’s now offered as a full hybrid, as opposed to the mild hybrid that’s been available since 2019 – and the range now starts at £23,749 (Vitara Full Hybrid from £25,499).

The mild hybrid comes with a 1.4 Boosterjet (petrol turbo engine) and a tiny 48V lithium-ion battery stored under the passenger seat, developing a combined 129bhp.

The full hybrid system pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 24kW electric motor, which is fed by a 140V lithium-ion battery pack, giving a combined output of 113hp. Both hybrids are available with front-wheel drive or as an ALLGRIP 4×4.

The Suzuki Vitara Mild Hybrid has a six-speed manual gearbox, fuel economy is up to 52.7mpg, CO2 emissions are as low as 121g/km, while 0-62 acceleration is 9.5 seconds.

The Vitara Full Hybrid comes with a six-speed automated manual gearbox, which is what used to call a semi-automatic. There’s no clutch pedal and the on-board computer picks the gears and activates the clutch automatically.

CO2 emissions are identical at 121g/km and it’s a fraction more economical (53mpg), but it takes 12.7 seconds to sprint from standstill to 62mph.

So, in other words, the benefit of the full hybrid over the mild hybrid is minimal on paper. This is largely down to the fact that the electrified system is on the modest side, so it’s more a beefed-up mild hybrid than full-on hybrid.

The battery boost is targeted at lower revs, and although it can travel under purely electric power, it’s really just for manoeuvring or briefly in slow moving traffic, whereas many full hybrids are capable of a gentle mile or so in EV mode.

Apart from the larger hybrid drivetrain and a couple of nods to the system in the driver’s display and infotainment system, the rest of the Vitara package is mostly unchanged. However, there is a loss of boot capacity (down from a healthy 362 litres to just 289 litres).

The fact that not much has changed since the 2019 refresh means that the Vitara generally is starting to show its age compared to newer rivals such as the Renault Captur E-Tech Hybrid, Nissan Juke Hybrid and Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid.

That’s not to say that the Vitara should be overlooked. It’s still a good-looking compact SUV with a four-wheel drive option (unlike its competitors) and it’s well equipped.

There are just two trims levels (SZ-T and SZ5), and AEB (Automated Emergency Braking), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, smartphone connectivity, rear parking camera, keyless entry/start, navigation and climate control are standard on both grades.

Inside, it’s put together well enough, but there’s a mass of hard, black plastic, and while it’s functional, it’s hardly cutting edge. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Smartphone Link, which lets you mirror your smartphone on the screen using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but it does have an aftermarket feel to it.

That said, the cabin is packaged well, so there’s plenty of space front and back, it’s comfortable and visibility is good. Just remember to try a version with the panoramic glass roof because it does lower the ceiling a little.

On the road the mild hybrid was a joy to drive, largely down to its potent 1.4-litre petrol engine, slick manual gearbox and surprisingly good driving dynamics.

Sadly, the full hybrid experience is blighted by its automated manual gearbox. Put your foot down from standstill and it’s hesitant, while the upshifts generally are slow. What’s more, the engine is vocal at these times, though it soon settles down. In short, the Vitara Full Hybrid is at its best being driven gently.

It also did something we’ve never experienced before. On motorway runs using cruise control with the speed set at 70mph, it actually changes down one, sometimes two gears, when you encounter a slight upward incline.

The hybrid system can be set in Eco or Standard mode via a button on the dash, prioritising either fuel efficiency or power. Additionally, in our test car there was a rotary selector next to the gear selector to engage Suzuki’s excellent ALLGRIP 4×4 system.

Thankfully, the Vitara’s handling is much the same as the mild hybrid, so no complaints there. However, it is worth heading off on a good test drive over different road surfaces, because the ride is on the firm side.

Otherwise, driving the Vitara Full Hybrid is an easy-going experience with light steering, good grip and well controlled body lean in more challenging corners.

Verdict: The Suzuki Vitara Full Hybrid doesn’t quite make the grade for us, but if good looks, value for money, tidy handling and an award-winning ownership experience are more important to you, then we’d recommended a test drive all the same.

We get to grips with the new commercial version of the iconic Suzuki Jimny

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin with a back story to put the launch of the Suzuki Jimny Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) into context.

The Suzuki Jimny has been with us since 1970 and some three million have found homes around the world.

During that time the dependable little 4×4 has developed a huge fanbase and is popular with both urban dwellers, country folk and serious off-roaders.

The current fourth generation car was launched to widespread acclaim in 2018, winning the World Urban Car trophy at the prestigious 2019 World Car Awards, amongst others.

However, it was dropped from the UK market last year because of strict emissions legislation – a real shame for the Japanese car manufacturer because it was a huge hit, with demand outstripping supply.

Now, Suzuki has reintroduced the Jimny as a light commercial vehicle, with the original vehicle’s rear bench seat removed to provide a flat loading bay and an 863-litre boot capacity.

Only available in “very limited numbers”, it will cost private customers £19,999, though some businesses will be able to pay £16,796 if they can reclaim the VAT.

The new Jimny “van” looks the same as the outgoing “passenger car” from the outside (cute and rufty tufty). Inside, the only other obvious clue that this is no ordinary Jimny is the black mesh cargo partition that prevents items flying into the front cabin.

There’s just one trim level available, so it’s not quite as well equipped as before. The dashboard and steering wheel are the same, but there’s no centre touchscreen this time round, for instance.

There are a few goodies all the same, including air conditioning, DAB radio, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), 15-inch Black steel wheels and cruise control with speed limiter.

Overall, the no-fuss interior is practical with wipe-clean surfaces and suitably placed grab handles for those mini adventures.

Most importantly of all, it’s still equipped with ALLGRIP PRO selectable 4WD with low transfer gear, 3-link rigid axle suspension, hill hold and descent control – the ingredients that help give this lightweight SUV its legendary off-road ability.

Powered by a punchy four cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 101bhp, it comes with a five-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy is up to 36.7mpg, while CO2 emissions are 173g/km.

Business users will need to know that it has a maximum payload and braked towing weight of 150kg and 1,300kg respectively.

We were treated to an exclusive first drive of the new Jimny off-road in deepest South Wales, though there was a little tarmac to sample its road-going manners, at an event to celebrate Suzuki’s rich and diverse history.

From its origins in textile manufacturing a century ago, Suzuki now sells 3.7 million cars and two million motorcycles every year, while its quad bikes and marine outboard engines are highly regarded globally.

How does it drive?

True to the 4×4 legend that the Jimny is, the LCV version is a real mountain goat of a vehicle, capable of reaching places other SUVs five times the price can only dream about.

Our Jimny coped effortlessly with steep inclines, thick mud tracks and water obstacles at the challenging Walters Arena vehicle development and test centre between Neath and Merthyr Tydfil.

It’s still not fast or a particularly sophisticated drive on the road, but there’s no denying its big personality and serious kerb appeal. In short, it’s one of those rare vehicles that puts a smile on your face the moment you set off.

Of course, the Jimny LCV is not perfect. It’s cosy up front and the addition of the partition restricts rearward travel of the seats, making legroom a challenge for taller drivers.

Its modest 120kg maximum payload might be an issue if it’s used as a van, but perhaps the biggest problem is that it’s a strict two-seater, which cuts families out of the equation, for instance.

The reality is that with limited numbers available, the initial allocation of Jimny LCVs will be snapped up in no time, just like the passenger car version, with many finding their way onto the second-hand market at inflated prices.

Verdict: The two-seater Suzuki Jimny Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) is a dream come true for enthusiasts – and some of these “vans” may even have to earn their keep. Ultimately, it’s an affordable mini SUV that lives up to its superb off-road pedigree and can still put a smile on your face.
